A crossover romance is coming in Sheriff Country season 2 and Fire Country season 5.

Fire Country season 2 introduced Mickey Fox (Morena Baccarin), the Sheriff of Edgewater, bringing her into the world of firefighter Bode Donovan (Max Thieriot), before getting her own spinoff series. Sheriff Country season 1 debuted alongside Fire Country season 4 last year, and both shows within the procedural franchise were renewed for new seasons set to debut on Friday nights as part of the CBS fall 2026 schedule.

During a press event (via Deadline), Thieriot teased, "I’m gonna drop this bomb but only hint at it. There may be some cross-show…” Baccarin interjected by saying, "Crossover love." Thieriot continued, "…that takes place this season as well. So I’m not gonna say who those two people are, but there might be something there that everybody’s gonna get to see.”

Sheriff Country season 1 and Fire Country season 4 had a two-hour crossover event, but a full-on romantic couple between the two shows is new territory. In Sheriff Country season 2 and Fire Country season 5, another two-hour crossover event is slated for November 6, which may be when it is revealed which characters are involved in the romance teased by Thieriot and Baccarin.

Within her own show, Baccarin's real-life husband, The OC and Gotham star Ben McKenzie, is a guest star in the season 2 premiere. He plays Sheriff Wade, a neighboring lawman brought in to assist Mickey. Baccarin shared at the press event that McKenzie "comes back, spoiler alert," meaning he will be in at least two episodes. Sheriff Country showrunner and executive producer Matt Lopez clarified in a previous interview with Deadline that "We’ll find out that they share a long personal history. That’s not to say romantic because it’s not."

Morena Baccarin and Ben McKenzie's Gotham characters, Jim Gordon and Lee Thompkins, did become a romantic couple.

With Mickey and Wade not being romantic, that doesn't mean that the upcoming crossover romance will involve her, though, with Baccarin explaining that, “Well, given that my last boyfriend didn’t work out so good for us, I think Mickey’s feeling a little burned at the moment, it’s all about getting her life back on track. I know that there are plans to have some sort of love interest, but I think a little bit further in the future for Mickey.”

As for Fire Country season 5, it will be exploring the crossover romance in a significantly shorter season. After 20 episodes each in seasons 3 and 4, season 5 has been reduced to 13 total episodes. However, Sheriff Country will still have 20 episodes in its sophomore outing, which was also the case for season 1.

Sheriff Country season 2 will lead Friday nights on CBS at 8:00 p.m. ET, followed by Fire Country season 5 at 9:00 p.m. ET, and Boston Blue season 2 at 10:00 p.m. ET. They join FBI, CIA, NCIS, NCIS: Origins, Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, Elsbeth, Marshals, and Tracker as scripted shows that are returning for another season on the network this fall. Other than special Halloween and Christmas episodes, Ghosts is being saved for a winter return, and Matlock and NCIS: Sydney will also come back at that time.
