NDC candidate promises bill stopping NYSC postings to insecure areas

The Nigerian Democratic Congress candidate for Oredo Federal Constituency in the January 16, 2027, House of Representatives election, Efosa Omo-Osagie, has promised to sponsor a bill prohibiting the deployment of National Youth Service Corps members to states and communities threatened by terrorism and banditry.

Omo-Osagie, popularly known as Mighty Man, said the proposed legislation would also penalise officials who deploy corps members to areas affected by insecurity despite existing security advisories.

He made the pledge while unveiling his 15-point legislative agenda during consultation meetings with NDC stakeholders, party leaders, support group coordinators, strategists, women and youth leaders, and religious groups in Edo State and Abuja.

“Among other things, I am seriously considering a bill to prohibit posting of NYSC corps members to states or parts of the federation under terrorists and bandits occupation or threats,” he said.

His manifesto, organised under six thematic areas, also covers infrastructure, reduction of governance costs, economic empowerment, anti-corruption, healthcare and education.

Addressing the gathering, Omo-Osagie criticised the use of public funds to maintain offices and programmes associated with the spouses and children of elected public office holders.

Under infrastructure, he proposed a bill mandating the installation of firefighting equipment, boreholes, solar panels and police desk offices in public markets across the country.

On the cost of governance, the NDC candidate promised to sponsor bills prohibiting pensions and other post-tenure benefits for elected public office holders, except former presidents and vice-presidents.

Omo-Osagie said he would devote his first tenure in the National Assembly to pursuing the proposed bills for the benefit of his constituency, Edo State and the country.

“Nigeria cannot continue like this. Sometimes we’ve got to say enough is enough, and I think this is the time,” he declared.

The consultations, which began in Benin City and extended to Abuja, are expected to precede the constitution of his campaign council, which he said would be announced in the coming days.

The engagement comes one week after The PUNCH reported that a Federal High Court sitting in Benin City sacked the previous NDC candidate, Uyi Omosigho, and declared Omo-Osagie the authentic candidate of the party.

The judgment, delivered on October 27, 2026, followed a legal battle involving several aspirants.
