Romance stories on the ice have really turned up the heat lately, with Heated Rivalry and Off Campus both exploring young love revolving around the game of hockey. The niche genre of winter sports-related romance has a rich history, though, dating back to classics like The Cutting Edge in 1992, which follows the blossoming relationship between a mercurial figure skater and an injured hockey star thrust together in the Olympic Games. Netflix is now working on a new Winter Olympics rom-com that's very much following in the footsteps of the Paul Michael Glaser-directed and Tony Gilroy-penned film. It also has a starry leading duo locked in to make the trip to Olympic Village.
Winter Games will unite two familiar stars of the streaming service, Spiderhead alum Miles Teller and Arcane lead Hailee Steinfeld, amid the high-stakes environment of international competition that only comes once every four years. They'll play a self-sabotaging hockey legend and a long-overlooked skier, each nearing their limits while trying to achieve their goals at the Olympics. When they collide, however, their plans are completely thrown off as they form an unexpected connection, threatening to derail his comeback and her overdue chance at a gold medal. So far, Teller and Steinfeld are the only names attached to star, but that could soon change with production set to begin early next year.
A new report from Production Weekly has cameras rolling on Winter Games starting on March 15, 2027, in Montreal, Quebec, with a two-month shoot that will take the Netflix original until May 12. It should be noted that the streamer hasn't confirmed anything itself, nor has an official release date been set, given how early along the film still is. Paul Downs Colaizzo will make his directorial debut with the rom-com, having previously penned the Amazon original Brittany Runs a Marathon starring Jillian Bell, while Designated Survivor's Pat Cunnane will join him as a co-writer. They'll have a pair of Oscar-nominated producers helping to bring it together, too, with King Richard's Tim and Trevor White backing Winter Games through their Star Thrower Entertainment banner.
