Alessandro Del Piero was full of praise for the players, staff and ownership group at Como after their statement win in their first ever Champions League match on Thursday evening, and was keen to point out that Cesc Fabregas’s side were the only one of the Italian sides to get their continental campaign off to a winning start.

Como were taking part in their first ever match in the Champions League on Thursday night after an historic fourth-place finish in Serie A last term, and went on to impress neutrals across Europe with an encouraging 4-1 victory over knock-out round regulars RB Leipzig.

Martin Baturina, Tasos Douvikas, Assane Diao and Maxi Perrone provided the goals on a special night at the Stadio Sinigaglia.

“Everything was special, the result, the first day for Como in Europe, making history, the vibe, the enthusiasm of the people, a lot of things happened tonight in a good way for Como and we are super happy,” said an impressed Del Piero in his post-match debrief with CBS Sports.

“I am actually super happy because representing Italy, they were the only win from four teams, so let’s cheer for Como.”

Del Piero was asked what impresses him most about Como and their trajectory under Fabregas.

He replied: “There’s different things. They’re super well organised, they show that organisation all the time. They have great energy for 60 minutes, I don’t want to say they dominate the game, but basically yes, they control the game, a lot of great personality.

“The question everyone is asking now even in Italy is how are they going to do it for the whole year playing Sunday-Wednesday-Sunday-Wednesday. But they are super happy, from Fabregas to the players, the ownership has a great chemistry with the staff and the players and everything looks just perfect. They don’t show any weak points at the moment.”
