Milei heads to New York for UN General Assembly

President Javier Milei travels to the United States later this evening to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Milei, 55, is scheduled to address the General Assembly on Wednesday and will use his remaining time in the US to hold meetings with economists, business leaders and representatives of the Jewish community.

Milei is also scheduled to sit down with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, though there is currently no bilateral meeting scheduled with US President Donald Trump, according to local media.

Milei is due to leave Buenos Aires at 11pm Monday night. He will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno, Economy Minister Luis Caputo and his sister, Presidential Chief-of-Staff Karina Milei. The travelling delegation is scheduled to arrive at John F. Kennedy International Airport at 9.30am on Tuesday.

The President's first engagement will come at around 4pm at Yeshiva Darchei Torah, an Orthodox Jewish boys' school, where he will speak and receive the ‘Ohev Yisrael’ award in recognition of his support for Israel.

Later on Tuesday, Milei is scheduled to meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with Argentina expected to raise its longstanding sovereignty claim over the Islas Malvinas, known in the UK as the Falkland Islands, according to Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno.

Milei will then meet Mexican economist and academic Roberto Salinas at 7pm, followed by a meeting with economist Xavier Sala i Martín, a US-based economist and professor at Columbia University, at 8.30pm.

Milei’s main engagement will come on Wednesday at midday, when he is due to address the 81st UN General Assembly for the third time as Argentina’s head of state. 

Local media expect the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands sovereignty dispute to feature prominently in the speech given renewed diplomatic tensions with the United Kingdom. 

Later that afternoon, he will speak at the ‘Western Values, Economic Freedom & Strategic Security’ conference, organised by the Fundación Federalismo y Libertad with institutional support from the International Republican Institute (IRI).

At around 6pm, Milei will meet business leaders and members of the Americas Society/Council of the Americas, including its president and CEO, Susan Segal, and between 12 and 15 executives and representatives of major international companies.

He will end the day with a 7.30pm meeting with Rabbi Simon Jacobson, a member of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement and founder of the Meaningful Life Center.

On Thursday at 1pm, Milei will speak at The Economic Club of New York, a non-profit and non-partisan organisation founded in 1907.

He is scheduled to leave New York at around 9pm and arrive back in Buenos Aires at 8.30am on Friday.
