Governor pushes better access to north, west Bali tourist spots

Bali Governor Wayan Koster is pushing for infrastructure development to be distributed more evenly across the island to improve access to tourism destinations, especially in the north, east, and west.
The initiative aims to ensure that the benefits of tourism growth are distributed evenly across Bali, rather than concentrated primarily in the southern areas of Denpasar, Badung, and Gianyar.
"Our focus going forward is access to East, North, and West Bali. Good infrastructure must be prepared for tourist attractions to be accessible to tourists," he remarked on Friday.
Koster acknowledged infrastructure development is a crucial factor in improving interregional connectivity while supporting equitable distribution of economic activity.
He noted that several areas in Bali require infrastructure support to optimally develop their potential tourist destinations and make them more accessible to tourists.
The governor then highlighted the need for infrastructure development to address traffic congestion, particularly in centers of tourism activity.
One project currently being planned is an overpass in Jimbaran, which Koster said had been discussed with the central government, including the Ministry of Public Works, for further planning and budget allocation.
Koster also urged the Badung District Government to support Bali's infrastructure development, noting that the district's substantial economic contribution should be matched by greater support for development in other parts of the island. He stated that of the tax revenues, which reached approximately Rp8.5 trillion (US$460 million) in 2022, approximately Rp6.3 trillion (US$341 million) came from Badung.
According to Koster, this figure demonstrates the district's significant contribution to Bali's economy.
Besides infrastructure improvement in southern Bali, the local government is also promoting new tourist destinations in other parts of the island. Therefore, better connectivity is expected to attract more visitors and boost local economies.
Koster stressed that Bali's tourism sector must be developed equitably, with improved access expected to create more business opportunities and spread the benefits of tourism to communities across the island's districts.
