Rick And Morty Co-Creator's Game Pulled From Sale With No Warning

Rick and Morty is still continuing apace, with a twelfth season already ordered by Warner Bros. Discovery, despite the fact that Season 10 is only set to air for the first time in the Summer of 2027. All of that is happening without the influence of co-creator Justin Roiland, who was dismissed by Adult Swim (when the show was airing there), after felony domestic violence charges were made public by NBC.

It's important to note that those charges were later dismissed, though a series of additional misconduct allegations made his return to the series impossible. Before all of that came to light, Roiland moved into the world of video games, founding Squanch Games before resigning around the same time as the emergence of the above allegations.

Now, the developer's first major standalone self-developed game has suddenly been pulled from stores without explanation, and there has been no word yet on whether it will ever return.

Trover Saves the Universe is a 2019 action platform game where a (very) strange being named Glorkon kidnaps the dogs of the protagonist before sucking their essence into its eyeholes, which in turn grants him incredible powers that could end the universe. As the title suggests, it's up to the player to stop that from happening, in a title that leans heavily into the comedic style that efforts like Rick and Morty are known for.

As first reported by VGC, the game has now suddenly been removed from digital storefronts, and it is no longer available for purchase on Steam, Epic Games Store, Meta, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. This came with no warning, but interestingly, the Steam DB listing shows the app_retired_publisher_request flag was active, which means the request to remove the game from sale almost certainly came from Squanch Games themselves.

The developer has yet to release any kind of statement on why the decision has been taken, some seven years after the game's initial release. Interestingly, the game also appears to have largely been scrubbed from the Squanch Games website, though you can still find references to it if you look in the right places.

It currently appears unlikely that Roiland's appearance in Trover Saves the Universe has anything to do with the decision, given that he features in 2022 effort High on Life, which still appears to be widely available at the time of writing. It may well emerge that some kind of rights issue has cropped up, but that remains speculation currently.
