Translate

Ademola Lookman was in action for Atletico Madrid who continued their winning run in LaLiga with a hard-fought 2-1 win away at Deportivo Alaves on Saturday.

Lookman was named in the starting lineup, making his seventh league (one goal) appearance before going off on 46 minutes.

Diego Simeone’s side came into Matchday 8 chasing the leaders and ended a four-match wait for success at Mendizorrotza.

Atletico struck first in the 33rd minute after Jonathan David flicked a brilliant backheel through the defence for Alejandro Grimaldo to finish clinically.

Alaves were gifted an equaliser deep into first-half stoppage time. Robin Le Normand hauled down Jonny Otto from a free-kick and Lucas Boyé converted from the penalty spot in the 6th minute of first half added time to make it 1-1.

The game turned just after the hour mark when Alaves defender Angel Pérez was sent off in the 61st minute after a VAR review for a reckless lunge on Julian Alvarez.

Atletico pushed with the extra man and had to wait until the 87th minute for the winner.

Substitute Alex Baena crossed into the box and summer signing Cristian Romero rose highest to head home what proved to be his first goal for the club and the winner.

The result lifts Atletico to 19 points from eight games and second in the table, while Alaves stay sixth on 11 points.
