Taal Volcano logs minor phreatomagmatic eruption

LUCENA CITY, Quezon — Taal Volcano in Batangas logged a minor phreatomagmatic eruption Wednesday morning, generating a plume rising about 250 meters above its main crater lake, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
In a bulletin issued shortly after 11 a.m., Phivolcs said the eruption occurred between 10:07 a.m. and 10:09 a.m. on Taal Volcano Island (TVI), located at the center of Taal Lake.
Phivolcs said the volcano’s IP surveillance camera captured the event.

The latest eruption followed a series of phreatic, or steam-driven, bursts recorded over the previous two days. Phivolcs reported two such events on Oct. 19 and another on Oct. 20. The agency reported a one-minute phreatic eruption in its early Wednesday morning bulletin.
Phivolcs also recorded a five-minute phreatomagmatic eruption on Oct. 8.
A phreatomagmatic eruption occurs when rising magma explosively interacts with water. A phreatic eruption, by contrast, is a steam-driven explosion caused when groundwater or surface water is rapidly heated by magma, lava or hot rocks.
Despite the latest eruption, Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1, indicating low-level volcanic unrest./coa
