Those other battles of Hastings | Letters

Translate

Having read your article (‘A God-almighty punch-up’: rare footage shows Battle of Hastings (the 1966 one), 6 October), I would love to know if anyone else remembers the “battle” that took place at Hastings on 5 March 1966 between students from Leicester University and Leicester College of Art and Technology (later De Montfort University).

We wore sacks painted with whitewash and made shields and helmets from cardboard; my diary entry (I was a second-year student at the university) gives a vivid picture of the day’s events, which ended with a dance on the pier. Apparently the BBC made a film – what happened to that, I wonder?

Reading your report of the re-emergence of a film showing a historical re-enactment of 60 years ago evokes memories of how the Bayeux tapestry was used on advertising hoardings 60 years ago: “Battle of Hastings 1066, Bottle of Guinness 1966”.
