34 Years Later, A 10/10 SNES Classic Just Sold For A Record-Breaking $100k

The gaming industry keeps getting more expensive, but the rising hardware prices are nothing next to what dedicated collectors are getting up to these days. The real value lies in classic games from consoles like the SNES, especially if a beloved SNES game in great condition creates the perfect storm of limited supply and high demand.

At a certain point, the attributed value has nothing to do with playing the game, but instead with having the perfect collector's object. Last week, a new auction exhibited this exact phenomenon, with one release from 1992 selling for over $100,000, all said and done.

As reported by ComicBook.com, a copy of Street Fighter 2 for the SNES reached a winning bid of $85,000 in a Goldin auction, requiring a sum total of $103,700 after a Buyer's Premium is applied. Street Fighter 2 is by no means a hard game to find, but the big appeal here lies in the condition. Not only is this copy still in shrinkwrap, but it was awarded a perfect 10/A++ grade from the PSA grading authority.

The Goldin auction description notes that "PSA has only validated 195 across all SNES variants," suggesting that this is a particularly valuable copy despite the over 6 million Street Fighter 2 SNES cartridges in the wild. It still falls very short of the game sale record set earlier this year — a PSA 9.6 copy of Super Mario Bros. reached an astronomical $3,000,000 — but it's also nothing to scoff at by any stretch of the imagination.

While I definitely have the collector's itch at times, I like to buy games with the intent of playing them, so it's hard not to view the sales happening on this level of the market as a bit absurd. There are certainly better uses for $100,000, particularly ones that would go toward helping the world rather than propping up a shiny Street Fighter 2 on a shelf.

All the same, it's certainly a milestone achievement for the game, signifiying just how iconic the classic fighter is today. The sale was made shortly in advance of the upcoming Street Fighter movie, which looks like it could be a fun romp with the franchise's memorable characters. Games have changed a lot over the several decades that have elapsed since the heyday of the SNES, but the status of Street Fighter doesn't seem to be diminishing.
