Since its 2023 premiere, The Diplomat has been one of Netflix's best and buzziest shows. The season 3 addition of Bradley Whitford in the role of Todd, the husband of Allison Janney's President Grace Penn, reunited two cast members of The West Wing, drawing attention to the similarities between the two shows.

In its first four seasons, The Diplomat has earned its comparisons to the definitive political drama, but it has also established itself as a unique, compelling, and refreshing series in its own right. Its iconic cast has brought The Diplomat not only fame, but also quality, and the show's impressive writing has matched the caliber of their performances.

Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell's performances have made Kate and Hal Wyler one of TV's most memorable, entertaining, and chaotic couples, while their unique and passionate approach to their work adds to the already nuanced and intricate nature of the show's politics.

For a Netflix original series, The Diplomat is notably complex, juggling international politics, tense, high-level dialogue, surprising plot twists, and layered interpersonal dynamics. The show's approach has clearly worked for the streamer, which renewed The Diplomat for season 5 only two weeks after the premiere of season 4.

Not only that, but the nature of the renewal bodes well for The Diplomat's future beyond season 5.

Even the most successful shows of the streaming era have proven to have a shorter lifespan than their network counterparts. In fact, the fifth season is often a streaming show's last, with the renewal announcement typically accompanied by the caveat that the upcoming season will be the show's "fifth and final."

There are examples of this across the streaming landscape, from Prime Video's The Boys, Paramount+'s Mayor of Kingstown, Netflix's own The Lincoln Lawyer, and, most recently, the renewal of MGM+'s From for a "fifth and final season."

The fact that The Diplomat's season 5 renewal didn't come with this fateful caveat is even more impressive when considering Netflix's particular tendency to cancel shows in their prime.

Though some shows, like The Morning Show, have been renewed for a fifth season that wasn't declared to be its last until later, The Diplomat has had notable critical acclaim and general popularity that have undoubtedly strengthened Netflix's reputation. The show is an asset that the streamer likely won't be eager to part with any time soon.

Why The Diplomat Deserves To Continue After Season 5

The Diplomat has struck a delicate balance of delivering shocking, flashy cliffhangers that spark conversation and intrigue, and following them up with genuine quality and nuance that somehow make those moments feel grounded and meaningful.

Season 3 ended with the jaw-dropping reveal that Hal and Grace had secretly stolen the Poseidon. The season 4 premiere doubled down on the unexpected twists by ending with President Penn getting shot. Both of these moments left viewers stunned, and the proximity of these cliffhangers to each other risked the show devolving into a melodrama constantly trying to top its last shocking reveal.

Yet The Diplomat has, in every instance, done the impossible and explored these events with depth that proved that they served the story in ways far beyond mere shock value. A season-long manhunt or unraveling of a conspiracy theory would have been the obvious story to follow the shooting of a President, but The Diplomat instead did something far more subtle and layered.

Grace's shooting was unexpected, but just as unexpected was the trajectory of the rest of The Diplomat season 4, in which Grace's decision-making became increasingly hostile and precarious in what was clearly a psychological response to the shooting. Rather than immediately chase another shocking twist, the show contextualized this one in a way that made the unbelievable believable.

Grace and Todd's relationship proved to be far more than a callback to The West Wing, as Todd's simultaneous care and deference to Grace served to both highlight and enable her problematic, unilateral decisions. Kate and Hal, meanwhile, entered a new stage of their relationship as Kate took initiative in trying to repair their marriage.

All of these elements were once again left in suspense at the end of The Diplomat season 4, when Kate publicly resigned, handing her badge to Grace and inspiring Grace's Vice President, Secretary of State, and chief of staff to follow suit.

Like every season before, The Diplomat has reignited its momentum and left viewers desperate to know what will happen next. At the same time, it has progressed its overarching examination of Kate and Hal's unique marriage and posed nuanced ethical questions that make the show feel more important than just a series of plot twists.

If it can keep this up, there's no reason The Diplomat can't continue for years to come.
