Josh Inglis Creates Australian Cricket History With Stunning Test Ton

Translate

Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis etched his name into the history books with his second Test century during the third Test against South Africa at Newlands on Thursday. Inglis, who returned to the Test playing XI after nearly a year, scored a century off 132 balls in the first innings to help Australia take a crucial lead. With the knock, Inglis became the first Australian cricketer to score multiple centuries in all three international formats. This was his second Test hundred, having scored his maiden century against Sri Lanka in 2025.

Only three Australians have scored multiple T20I centuries. Apart from Inglis, Glenn Maxwell (five) and Aaron Finch (two) have achieved the feat, but neither has multiple centuries across the other two formats.

Maxwell also has four ODI centuries but only one Test hundred, which came against India in 2017. Finch, meanwhile, scored 17 ODI centuries but never registered a Test hundred. As a result, Inglis is the only Australian with more than one century in Tests, ODIs and T20Is.

Inglis returned to the playing XI for the series-deciding Test after last featuring in the 2025 Ashes. He had been recovering from a fractured finger sustained during the preceding ODI series against South Africa.

Australia made four changes for the match, bringing back Inglis, Cameron Green, Nathan Lyon and Cooper Connolly.

The wicketkeeper-batter reached his century on the third day after helping Australia recover strongly in reply to South Africa's first-innings total of 329.

He arrived at the crease with Australia on 184/3 and saw Green dismissed by Simon Harmer for 65 shortly afterwards.

After Australia slipped to 185/4, Inglis and Alex Carey combined to steady the innings and put the visitors in a strong position by stumps on Day 2.

Inglis continued his fine form on Day 3, bringing up his hundred off 132 balls. The milestone came with a reverse sweep off Harmer.

He was later dismissed by Harmer for 102, an innings featuring 11 fours and two sixes, as Australia secured a valuable first-innings lead.
