Pertamina urged to expand sago use in oil drilling

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Industry Minister Muhammad Sarmuji has urged state energy company Pertamina to expand the use of sago in oil-well drilling to boost domestic products and strengthen local industrial supply chains.
Speaking in Jakarta on Thursday, Sarmuji said the government and Pertamina had discussed increasing domestic content requirements and the company's commitment to using locally made products.
"We received Pertamina to discuss increasing domestic content. The company is committed to continuously raising its use of domestic products in line with government standards," Sarmuji said.
He said trials using sago in oil drilling at two wells had produced positive results, prompting the government to encourage wider implementation.
"We have asked Pertamina to expand sago use in drilling operations. Trials have been conducted, and we will prepare the Indonesian National Standard (SNI)," Sarmuji said.
He said the government would develop an SNI for sago use in drilling, potentially making compliance mandatory if the local material meets industrial requirements.
Each oil well requires about 10 tons of sago, Sarmuji said. With Pertamina potentially applying the material across about 900 wells, demand could create a new market for Indonesia's sago industry.
Domestic sago supplies are considered sufficient, particularly from East Seram district in Maluku, which has partnered with a starch-processing company to strengthen industrial capacity, he said.
Expanding sago applications in drilling is expected to accelerate downstream processing, increase the commodity's added value and boost domestic product utilization in the energy sector.
Meanwhile, Pertamina Logistics and Infrastructure Director Jaffee Arizon Suardin said the company supported the government's efforts to increase domestic content.
"As a state-owned enterprise, Pertamina has many industries that require domestic components," he said.
Jaffee said Pertamina had informed the Industry Ministry of plans to bring together domestic business owners and technology providers to strengthen industrial collaboration.
The company would also establish a business-matching platform to connect its procurement needs with products and capabilities offered by domestic industries, optimizing local component utilization.
"We are ready to collaborate with the minister and other government agencies to ensure these efforts can be implemented quickly," Jaffee said.
