Victory over Singapore needed as Malaysia target FIFA Asean Cup final

BANDUNG: Harimau Malaya's hopes of reaching the FIFA Asean Cup final remain alive, with victory over Singapore in their final Group A match on Thursday set to significantly strengthen their chances.

Before turning his attention to the final, however, interim coach Tan Cheng Hoe must first ensure his players are in the best possible condition after two demanding matches against Bangladesh and Indonesia.

Cheng Hoe said the players' physical condition would be assessed before deciding on his strongest line-up to face Singapore.

"Yes, we will look at the condition of the players after two difficult matches.

"They need good recovery and we have to analyse what is best for the team and which players are in the best condition to face Singapore," he said.

Cheng Hoe also explained that the changes against Indonesia were aimed at increasing Malaysia's attacking threat and finding a goal more quickly, rather than allowing the match to remain congested in midfield.

"Of course, the decision to make changes was more about trying to get a goal quicker rather than continuing to hold things in midfield," he said.

He added that winger Faisal Halim had performed well, but his physical condition, along with several other key players, would need to be assessed before any decision is made.

"Of course Faisal played well. We will wait and see how these players are doing.

"We are ready to play against Singapore," he said.

The Singapore match is now Harimau Malaya's main focus as the result could play a crucial role in determining the final Group A standings.

A victory would not only give Malaysia a positive finish to the group campaign but also put them in a stronger position to continue their push for a place in the final.

Malaysia currently lead Group A with four points, level with second-placed Indonesia but ahead on goal difference.

Singapore are third with three points, while Bangladesh remain bottom without a point.

With one match remaining, the race for a place in the final is still open.

The group winners will advance to the final, while the runners-up will contest the third-place playoff, with both matches scheduled to be held at the Gelora Bung Karno on Monday.
