Super Eagles’ push to be Africa’s best begins with AFCON qualifiers — Adams

Super Eagles striker, Akor Adams, says Nigeria’s ambition to become the best team in Africa must begin with the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Adams stated this in an interview with Pooja Media which was posted on Thursday ahead of the Super Eagles’ forthcoming qualifying fixtures.

According to the striker, the two qualification matches are important as they will set the tone for what the team hopes to achieve.

“It’s very important because I think it sets the mark for what we want to do. If we want to be the best team in Africa, it starts from the qualification, like the coach has clearly said. And that is what we aim to achieve as well,” Adams said.

Head coach, Éric Chelle, recently named his squad for the AFCON qualifiers and a friendly against Russia, with several new players receiving their first call-ups to the national team.

Adams welcomed the new additions, saying competition for places would help strengthen the Super Eagles.

“It’s always good to see that we have players who are also doing well, and who can get the chance to be in the team. Whatever makes us better, that’s the goal.

“The coach makes it very clear that if any player that comes here clearly deserves it, and we’re happy to welcome them as well,” he said.

The striker, who returned to the squad for the international break, described his return as a privilege and said the players were happy to reunite.

“It feels good, feels good. It’s also a privilege to be back with the group, and yeah, we’re happy to be back,” Adams said.

Adams also appealed to the fans to remain positive and support the team during the qualifiers.

“Be optimistic, come out in good support and in good faith in the team, because we know you guys support us. And we’ll try to give our best on the pitch,” he added.

The Super Eagles will be seeking to secure qualification for the 2027 AFCON as they begin their campaign under Chelle.
