Star Trek is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2026, marking six decades since Gene Roddenberry first introduced audiences to the final frontier in 1966. It's a bittersweet milestone for longtime fans, however, following the heartbreaking passing of Sir Patrick Stewart on October 28 at the age of 86. Stewart's portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard helped define an entire era of the franchise, and his legacy will undoubtedly live on through generations of fans who grew up watching Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Despite this tremendous loss, Star Trek continues to expand its universe with new stories, characters, and adventures that build on its extraordinary history. That includes revisiting some of the franchise's most iconic villains, particularly the Borg, whose terrifying pursuit of perfection has haunted Starfleet for decades.
Now, as part of the franchise's ongoing anniversary celebrations, an unexpected new addition to the Borg is on the horizon, and it's absolutely terrifying (and a little bit adorable).

One of the most unusual reveals from the upcoming Magic: The Gathering x Star Trek crossover is Overflow Submatrix, a new Borg card that appears to depict an assimilated member of a feline alien species. Fans have suggested that the creature could be a Caitian, the catlike species introduced in Star Trek: The Animated Series and more recently represented by Dr. T'Ana in Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Although the card doesn't officially identify the Borg drone's original species, its striking appearance has already caught the attention of fans. The Borg have assimilated countless species throughout Star Trek history, although their appearances in live-action productions have typically featured humanoid drones. The new artwork offers an interesting glimpse at what the Collective might look like after assimilating a far more diverse range of alien species.
Overflow Submatrix is classified as a Rare Artifact Creature — Borg, costing three mana to summon, with three power and three toughness. Its special ability allows players to cast an artifact creature spell from their graveyard once during each of their turns. However, the resurrected creature receives a finality counter, meaning it will be exiled if it dies again.
It's a fitting ability for the Borg, reflecting the Collective's ability to repurpose technology and replenish its forces. The standard card features artwork by Carlos Dattoli alongside a warning from Guinan about the Borg's tendency to attack in overwhelming numbers. An alternate showcase version featuring artwork by Viktor Fetsch will also be available.
Overflow Submatrix will be included in the November 13, 2026 release as part of the larger Magic: The Gathering x Star Trek crossover, with prerelease events beginning November 6. The expansion celebrates the franchise's 60th anniversary by introducing hundreds of cards inspired by its characters, vessels, and iconic moments.
The crossover also features four Commander decks, including the Borg-focused We Are the Borg, allowing players to command the Collective themselves. Alongside familiar faces like the Borg Queen and Locutus, Overflow Submatrix offers a particularly intriguing glimpse at the horrifying possibilities of assimilation in Star Trek, even if its feline look hasn't been officially explained.
