An entirely free Dungeons and Dragons download has just been made available for everyone, and it’s centered around the TTRPG’s latest official release. There’s a lot going on with Wizards of the Coast’s popular RPG lately. Apart from the recent release of Arcana Unleashed, the game is gearing up for the release of D&D: World of Warcraft in November. Additionally, we got a sneak peek into the Star Wars book expansions planned for 2027. While these are the biggest releases planned for the near future, there is one that just came out.
Available now on D&D Beyond, Project Lamordia is a new survival horror thriller expansion to Dungeons and Dragons, centered around one of the main Dark Lords from Ravenloft, Viktra Mordenheim. However, apart from the paid content, new free content was released for everyone to grab, regardless of whether you’re subscribed to the platform or not. Available via Viktra’s Memo on D&D Beyond, players now have free access to a file of horror-themed character options.
"You discovered a hidden exploit in Mordenheim Kinetics system," reads the teaser. "The doctor has sealed her campus behind the Mists and will not open it again until Project Lamordia is finished, no matter what that cost to the people still inside."
The file contains ideas for creating a Lamordian Survivor, something that is to be agreed upon between the player and the DM. These are a few ideas that can be expanded upon. On top of that, the new free download for Dungeons and Dragons features unique Talents for Lamordian Survivor characters. These Talents can either be picked up during an ASI level, or granted by the DM whenever it makes sense for the character to unlock such a skill.
These Lamordian Survivor Talents synergize quite well with the D&D feats from Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, in the sense that they dive into the horror genre. These free new Talents aren’t required to use when playing Project Lamordia, though they are built around the survival horror themes of the new expansion.
So what is Project Lamordia? This is a new expansion set in an alternative version of Lamordia, one of the Domains of Dread from the new Ravenloft: The Horrors Within sourcebook – and a classic horror setting for D&D. Through an experiment, Lamordia became a modernistic AI-gone-wrong nightmare. The expansion is set within the Mordenheim Kinetics facility and is composed of three one-shots, which can be tied into a full adventure.
While Dungeons & Dragons is certainly no stranger to embracing the horror genre, it's also not the default for the RPG to lean into full-on survival horror. This should be a fun little bonus for fans everywhere, then.
Project Lamordia features some content that was already available in Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, such as the Reborn species and Dark Gifts. However, it features new mechanics, unique monsters, and maps. The free new download for Dungeons and Dragons, however, is entirely new and can be enjoyed even if you don’t plan on obtaining Project Lamordia so soon.
