CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — The police in Mimaropa have accounted for 216 loose firearms since May as the regional police chief ordered intensified operations against illegal gun possession and gun-related violence ahead of the Undas observance.

Police Brig. Gen. Christopher R. Dela Cruz, Mimaropa regional police director, issued the directive during an October 27 command conference, tasking police commanders to strengthen law enforcement, coordinate with local governments and mobilize communities to prevent firearm-related incidents.

Oriental Mindoro recorded the highest number at 86, followed by Romblon with 41 and Occidental Mindoro with 39. The remaining 50 firearms came from the provinces of Marinduque and Palawan.

“Let us make this upcoming UNDAS the safest. I call on all our police personnel to remain vigilant, proactive, and ready to respond to any situation that may threaten public safety,” Dela Cruz said.

He emphasized the need for proactive policing and cooperation among law enforcement agencies, local governments and residents as families troop to cemeteries and memorial parks to honor their departed loved ones. /jpv
