Tinubu hails King Sunny Ade at 80, says musician exemplifies excellence, cultural ambassadorship

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated legendary Nigerian musician, Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Ade, on his 80th birthday, describing him as an exemplar of musical excellence and cultural ambassadorship.

Mr Tinubu, in a birthday message issued on Tuesday by the State House, praised the juju music icon for using his talent and career to project Nigeria’s cultural heritage to audiences around the world.

“Today, I warmly celebrate Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, the legendary King Sunny Ade and an icon of Nigerian and African music, on his 80th birthday,” the president said.

“For eight decades, you have exemplified musical excellence and cultural ambassadorship, enriching our nation and bringing joy to millions across generations.”

Mr Tinubu said the musician’s creativity, discipline and enduring passion had helped transform juju music into a globally recognised Nigerian cultural treasure.

He said King Sunny Ade’s distinctive sound, which combines guitar, talking drums and other traditional instruments, as well as his stage performances and innovative approach to music, had earned him “a distinguished place in the history of African arts and entertainment.”

Globalising Nigerian music

King Sunny Ade, born on September 22, 1946, is one of Nigeria’s most internationally recognised musicians and a leading figure in the development and globalisation of modern juju music.

He began his professional music career in the 1960s and formed his own band, the Green Spots, in 1967. He subsequently became the leader of the African Beats and rose to prominence in Nigeria during the 1970s.

His international breakthrough came in the early 1980s following his signing with Island Records’ Mango imprint. His albums Juju Music (1982) and Synchro System (1983) introduced his distinctive blend of Yoruba musical traditions, electric guitars, percussion and talking drums to a wider international audience.

Synchro System earned him a Grammy nomination in 1984, making him the first Nigerian artist to receive one. His album Odu was also nominated for Best World Music Album in 1999. The Recording Academy lists him as a two-time Grammy nominee.

Mr Tinubu said the musician’s achievements went beyond entertainment, noting that his career had demonstrated how Nigerian cultural heritage could transcend national boundaries.

“As one of Africa’s most celebrated entertainers, you have brought the richness of our culture to audiences worldwide,” the president said.

“Beyond your musical accomplishments, you have remained a proud ambassador of Nigeria, demonstrating through your career that our cultural heritage can transcend borders and speak powerfully to people everywhere.”

The president also credited King Sunny Ade with inspiring generations of musicians and practitioners in Nigeria’s creative industry.

“Your music has not only entertained, but it has also preserved our cultural identity, celebrated our traditions and projected the beauty and diversity of our country to the world,” he said.

‘You embody excellence, perseverance’

Mr Tinubu said the Nigerian government recognised the importance of cultural icons such as King Sunny Ade in projecting the country’s identity and creative potential.

“As President, I deeply recognise and celebrate the immense contributions of our cultural icons. On this important milestone, I am especially grateful to God for the grace He has given you,” he said.

“At 80, you embody excellence, perseverance and service to the arts. Your achievements remind us that talent, when combined with dedication and commitment to one’s heritage, can become an enduring national legacy.”

Mr Tinubu, on behalf of his family, the government and people of Nigeria, wished the musician good health, wisdom and many more fulfilling years.

“May Almighty God bless you with good health, wisdom and many more fulfilling years,” he said.
