Mount Bromo to reopen to tourists after fire extinguished

Malang, East Java (ANTARA) - Mount Bromo will reopen to tourists on September 19 after authorities declared conditions safe following a fire in the area, the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (TNBTS) said.

TNBTS Head Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha said on Friday the decision followed assessments of safety, visitor capacity and the sustainability of local communities' economies.

The reopening will take effect Saturday, September 19, according to the authority.

The decision was formalized in Announcement Letter No. PG.25/T.8/TU/HMS.01.07/B/09/2026 concerning the reopening of the Bromo tourism area.

Visitors holding tickets dated Sept. 19-30, 2026, may enter on their scheduled dates, Nugraha said.

They do not need new tickets, while existing tickets cannot be rescheduled or refunded, he said.

TNBTS data showed 200 transactions involving tourist groups had requested refunds or visit rescheduling.

Each group typically comprised four to six people, according to the authority.

The requests involved visitors scheduled to travel to Mount Bromo from September 12-18, when the area was closed because of the fire.

TNBTS had projected 2,429 visitors during that period, compared with a daily visitor quota of 2,752 people.

Nugraha urged visitors to avoid fire hazards, including lighting campfires and discarding cigarette butts.

He also urged visitors to immediately alert officers about smoke, embers, hotspots or other conditions that could trigger fires.

Earlier, the Malang District Disaster Management Agency confirmed a fire in Jemplang, part of the Mount Bromo area, had been extinguished after intensive efforts by a joint team.
