Uganda’s Mombasa consul general arrested over Sh490m loss
The Inspectorate of Government has arrested Uganda’s Consul General in Mombasa, Kenya, Ambassador Herbert Kiguli, over allegations of causing a financial loss of more than Shs494 million to the government.
According to a statement released by the anti-graft agency, the 59-year-old diplomat allegedly caused a direct financial loss amounting to Shs 494,097,270 to the Republic of Uganda. The Inspectorate confirmed that Ambassador Kiguli is scheduled to appear before the Anti-Corruption Court in Kololo, Kampala, to face formal charges.
Ambassador Kiguli, a human resource management specialist and veteran public servant, was appointed to the Mombasa mission in October 2024. In his diplomatic role, he has been tasked with overseeing economic, commercial, and cultural ties between Uganda and Kenya's coastal region, a vital transit corridor for Ugandan trade.
The Inspectorate of Government noted that details of the specific transactions leading to the alleged loss will be presented during his arraignment in court today.
