Born on October 12, 1983, Soubin Shahir made his acting debut with 'Annayum Rasoolum' in 2013. He gained wider recognition following his performance in Nivin Pauly and Alphonse Puthren's 'Premam' (2015).

He has also established himself as a director and producer in the Malayalam film industry. Soubin's antagonist role in Rajinikanth's 'Coolie' received much adulation.Malayalam actor and filmmaker Soubin Shahir’s 6,300-square-foot apartment in Kochi stands out for its extensive greenery and thoughtful connection to nature.

Plants feature prominently throughout the residence, turning the urban home into a green retreat.

Childhood memories inspired his love for plants

In an interview with Architectural Digest, Soubin Shahir spoke about how his childhood experiences influenced his relationship with nature. His mother would assign household chores to the children, and watering the garden became his responsibility. Recalling those days, he said, “I guess I owe it to my childhood, when my amma (mother) would assign us different chores. Mine was to water the plants in our garden,”He further explained how the experience shaped his interests and influenced his plans for his future home.

“Over the years, this made me develop a deep attachment towards plants, birds and insects. I had always known that some day when I set up my own home, I would have lots of plants around me—a whole lot more than just a cute little garden! Maybe, my passion for plants also stems from a subconscious need to retain the innocence and simplicity of my childhood days.

A green entrance welcomes visitors

Spread across the fifth floor of an 11-storey building, the apartment introduces its nature-inspired design at the entrance.

A fallen tree trunk serves as a sculptural seating arrangement, while broken-stone flooring adds texture to the foyer.

Varieties such as variegated gigantium, pandanus and papyrus surround the entrance. Natural light filters through the foliage.

Landscaped balconies connect rooms to nature

As reported by AD, the apartment’s design extends its outdoor elements into the main living spaces. Landscaped balconies surround the residence, allowing natural greenery to remain visible from different rooms.

The informal living and dining areas open onto a long balcony, while the formal living room connects to another green space beside the foyer. The extensive planting includes Brazilian cherry trees, painting bamboos, calatheas, ferns, monsteras, figs, palms, anthuriums and elephant ears.

Soubin Shahir personally maintains the greenery

The plants are not merely decorative features in the actor’s residence. When he is home, Soubin Shahir personally tends to them, pruning their leaves and moving them to different spots when required. Coming to the actor's work front, Soubin Shahir’s latest theatrical release, 'Khalifa: The Ruler', arrived in cinemas on August 20, 2026, in which he makes a cameo appearance. Directed by Vysakh, 'Khalifa' had Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead.DISCLAIMER: Figures presented in this article are derived from various public sources and are considered approximate unless explicitly noted.
