Red Dead Redemption 2: Undead Damnation Unveiled

Translate

James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.

The original Red Dead Redemption game was obviously fantastic in its own right, but a lot of the attention and plaudits these days is understandably directed at the stunning sequel. That said, there is one area in particular where the first game has a distinct advantage to this day, and that's in the single-player DLC that Rockstar deigned to provide us with.

Specifically, the Undead Nightmare DLC was a huge hit, as the undead came to life and took over the Old West, with the player acting as a last line of defense with little more than a six-shooter and a horse. It was genuinely a lot of fun within the wider context of that game, and fans were hoping for something similar from the sequel.

Unfortunately, that never materialized, and we never received any official DLC for Red Dead Redemption 2, which feels like a travesty given how spectacular the base game is. Now, that could all be about to change thanks to the dedicated work of fans, and it could be one of the most exciting arrivals of the next few years if it all comes to fruition.

Over on YouTube, the channel Rixus uploaded the first official trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2: Undead Damnation, a major mod that essentially does all of the same stuff that made the original Undead Nightmare so special. The description reads as follows:

"After many months of hard work behind the scenes, I'm honored to present the first look at our new project for the Red Dead Redemption 2 community: Undead Damnation. This fan-created prequel to Undead Nightmare incorporates all the mechanics and features of the original 2010 DLC. It recaptures the apocalyptic atmosphere of the undead curse, spreading it across the entire game map from Annesburg to Tumbleweed, and includes new locations to save, cemeteries to clear, new missions and encounters, classic soundtracks, new zombie types, and much more. Coming soon for free to everyone via Nexusmods."

Arguably the best decision the mod creators have made there is to replicate the original DLC as closely as possible, only within the confines of the sequel (which is better from a gameplay perspective). The old adage of not needing to fix stuff that isn't broken springs to mind, and even just what we have seen in the trailer looks impressive so far.

Obviously, the mod is likely still a fair way away from being finished, given that it doesn't even have an official Nexus Mods page yet, but it's certainly going to be an exciting one to follow along with.

New experiences within Red Dead Redemption 2 is likely going to be our best port of call for having fun with the franchise for a while to come yet. Much of the attention is understandably going to be on Grand Theft Auto VI for the next year or two, but even beyond that, it isn't clear what Rockstar plans to do with their cowboy classic. It was only ever intended to be a two-parter, so that might mean that we have already seen their final foray into the series. Let's hope not.
