Mid-Autum Festival moon to be visible, despite expected storm

Most of Taiwan should expect partly cloudy to sunny weather over the holiday this week, with favorable conditions to view the moon across Taiwan on the night of Mid-Autumn Festival tomorrow, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said yesterday.
However, a tropical depression last night developed into a tropical storm, Surigae (舒力基), and is expected to grow into a moderate typhoon by tomorrow.
It is projected to continue moving west-northwest to reach waters south of Taiwan before pivoting north on Saturday, the agency said.

It would then move northeast passing over waters east of Taiwan and toward Japan’s Ryukyu Islands, it said.
The storm is expected to come closest to Taiwan on Sunday and Monday while remaining at moderate strength, and then gradually weaken as it moves north.
It would bring scattered showers from Taoyuan northward and Yilan County on Monday and Tuesday.
Through Sunday, most parts of Taiwan would generally see partly cloudy to sunny weather, CWA forecaster Lai Hsin-kuo (賴欣國).
Tomorrow, windward areas including the north coast of Keelung, greater Taipei, eastern Taiwan and the Hengchun Peninsula could see isolated brief showers.
By today, Keelung’s northern coastline, the eastern half of Taiwan proper and mountainous areas around Taipei should experience sporadic showers, with afternoon rains expected throughout Taiwan proper, the CWA said.
On Mid-Autumn Festival, the weather is likely to be sunny or cloudy, with the evening moon visible except in the mountains north of Chiayi County, it said.
Sporadic rains in the Hualien-Taitung region and afternoon showers in the mountains throughout Taiwan proper are expected, although forecasts could change with the typhoon’s course, it said.
Starting on Saturday, Keelung’s northern coastline, Taiwan proper’s eastern region, Green Island (綠島) and Orchid Island (Lanyu, 蘭嶼) would likely experience sea swells, the agency said.
At the same time, the highest tide in Penghu County is expected to coincide with the typhoon’s rains and winds, resulting in flooding risks, it said.
The week’s midday temperature could exceed 30°C, and parts of Taiwan could experience temperatures of about 33.5°C, the CWA said.
For Hsinchu and Miaoli counties, a lack of clouds could lead to cool weather, with morning temperatures of less than 20°C, resulting in large temperature swings during the same period, it said.
