New report: Eric Tinkler returning to PSL club after dumping African giants

Durban City are reportedly closing in on appointing South African tactician Eric Tinkler.

According to journalist Sinethemba Makonco of iDiski Times, Tinkler is finalising a move to eThekwini. It follows a day after resigning from Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko.

ERIC TINKLER DUMPED ASANTE KOTOKO FOR HOME RETURN

The former Bafana Bafana midfielder spent only three months in Ghana. During that period, he guided Asante Kotoko to victory in the 2026 Democracy Cup. This past weekend he suffered a 2-0 defeat to Aduana Stars, his first league loss of the season.

Following his request to leave the club, Durban City moved quickly to secure his services. The Durban based side were searching for a new coach after parting ways with Tunisian tactician Khalil Ben Youssef.

Ben Youssef was dismissed after a difficult start to the 2026/27 campaign. Tinkler is expected to take charge immediately.

DURBAN CITY’S COACHING REVOLVING DOOR

The Citizens have gone through several coaching changes since securing promotion to the top flight..

  • Simo Dladla: Departed immediately after masterminding the club’s promotion due to contract disagreements.
  • Sinethemba Badela: Appointed because of his youth development expertise before the technical team was restructured.
  • Gavin Hunt: Brought in as senior head coach but parted ways with the club after five months in December 2025.
  • Pitso Dladla: Took over as interim manager and successfully guided Durban City to a top eight league finish and the Nedbank Cup title.
  • Khalil Ben Youssef: The Tunisian tactician took charge at the beginning of the 2026/27 season but was dismissed after just three months.

Tinkler now inherits a club that has experienced significant changes on the technical bench while continuing to pursue domestic and continental ambitions.

The former Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City coach also brings extensive Betway Premiership experience, having previously worked with SuperSport United, Maritzburg United and Sekhukhune United.

His appointment would give Durban City another experienced South African coach as they look to establish greater stability on the technical bench.

The timing also gives Tinkler an opportunity to assess his squad during the international break before the Betway Premiership resumes.
