Vinted's big shake-up: Shopping giant bringing in major T&C changes for 17million UK users - here's what you need to know, from counterfeit item rules to wallet updates

Translate

Vinted is now the third largest fashion retailer with 17 million UK users. Coming in behind only Primark and Next, it's even outperforming fashion brands like ASOS and H&M.

But, as of 8 October 2026, Vinted users will be asked to accept a new set of Terms and Conditions to continue using the online clothes (and clutter) buying and selling app. So, to avoid you trawling through pages of legal jargon, we’ve found the four biggest changes that you need to know about as both a buyer and seller (you're welcome!)

The 'Buyer protection fee' will change name

This is probably the change most buyers are likely to notice. As you ‘checkout’, the fee that is now described as ‘The Buyer Protection fee’ will be renamed to a ‘Vinted fee’.

The Vinted fee will be calculated in the same way as the current mandatory ‘Buyer Protection fee’ (a charge of three to eight per cent of the buyer’s item or bundle price), with buyers still able to flag any problems with their item within two calendar days of delivery.

Vinted's new T&C's will see its 'Buyer protection fee' renamed to a 'Vinted fee'.

According to the updated Terms and Conditions, ‘It helps cover the ongoing costs of running and improving the Vinted platform.' Vinted's updated T&C's says this includes services like issuing refunds and managing transactions.

Concerns and moderation

The new T&Cs outline a shorter (and broader) definition for how Vinted handles community concerns and moderation including corrective action like account blocking. While the current T&Cs set out a long list of specific instances where an account might be blocked without prior notice (including suspicions with a payment processor or safety and legal concerns), the updated rules sees that entire section removed and replaced by a far more general description of the 'proportional' corrective measures Vinted may take.

The new T&Cs read: ‘To keep the Site safe and secure for Users, we may take corrective actions if your Content, Items, or activity on the Site is unlawful, a threat to public security, or violates in any way these Terms or the Catalogue Rules.’

Counterfeit items

The new T&Cs mean that if Vinted verifies an item as counterfeit it can destroy or dispose of it after six weeks if the seller cannot provide satisfactory proof to challenge it.

Vinted defines this six week period as a ‘Retention Window’, with the new T&Cs outlining that ‘You acknowledge and agree that if you fail to provide satisfactory proof of authenticity or a formal objection within this Retention Period we retain the right to dispose of the item immediately upon the expiration of the Retention Period.'

Sellers have six weeks to respond to counterfeit claims before items are disposed or destroyed.

What’s more, if the Vinted verification team find the item to be counterfeit, the new T&Cs mean you ‘authorize us to dispose of, recycle, or destroy it without further notice or compensation.’

Sellers have more time to respond to counterfeit claims

With the current T&Cs, Vinted sellers only have 24 hours to respond if there is strong evidence to suggest that an item they have sold is counterfeit. The new T&Cs will give sellers double the time to respond.

The new T&C's stipulate, ‘They’ll have 48 hours to provide us with evidence that the Item is authentic.’

However, while sellers have twice as long to respond with evidence, the consequence is the same if they’re unable to provide evidence that the item is authentic.

'We’ll cancel the Transaction and you won’t need to return the Item to the Seller in order to get a refund as described in the table below.’

Deleting your account

You should also make sure to withdraw any funds from your Vinted Wallet before deleting your account.

The new rules state, 'If you created a Vinted Wallet, deleting you Account may also result in a request being sent to your Vinted Wallet Provider to close your Vinted Wallet.'

While your Vinted Wallet won't be closed immediately, it's worth paying attention to the timelines set out by your Vinted Wallet Provider.

Account and balance verification

New terms and conditions will stipulate that the bank account attached to your Vinted account matches the details of your Vinted balance.

'If the Vinted Wallet Providers are unable to verify the details, they may require you to correct the information before you can continue to use the Vinted Wallet and/or before a payout can be completed.'
