Seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton conceded that it will be almost impossible to stop Kimi Antonelli from winning the 2026 drivers’ championship.
“There’ll be no stopping him and Mercedes this year,” Hamilton said after retiring from the Spanish Grand Prix at the new Madring circuit due to a brake failure.
Hamilton is currently third in the standings, 101 points behind the 20-year-old Italian who has won eight of 14 rounds so far.
“They’ve done a phenomenal job and they deserve it.”
Antonelli’s teammate George Russell said he was no longer in a realistic fight for the top honours after falling 81 points behind the 20-year-old.
“We’re obviously in a great place to win the constructors’,” Russell said after finishing fifth on Sunday. “Realistically, I’m not in the fight for the drivers’, and that just allows me to focus race by race and try to get some good results.”
