Gavin Goudey Details Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson Advice
Scarlett Johansson, Colin Jost Step Out for First Red Carpet Appearance in More Than a Year
Gavin Goudey is no paper tiger after his first professional film experience.
While playing Scott Pearl in the James Gray film might have been Goudey’s first professional set experience, he gleaned enough valuable advice from costars Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller to make him a rising force in Hollywood.
“I picked up something different from each of them,” Goudey told E! News in an exclusive interview at the movie’s New York Film Festival premiere Sept. 25. “They operate so differently.”
But while Goudey plays one of the sons to Johansson’s Linda Pearl and Teller’s Irwin Pearl alongside costar Roman Engel, he highlighted the expertise he learned sharing scenes with Driver, who plays his uncle Gary Pearl.
“With him, I learned the strength in stillness and the power of confidence,” Goudey shared. “I think confidence comes from preparation because he had this incredible ability—each take he did was perfect and it was so different.”
Even while embodying his own character, Goudey couldn’t help but be “in awe” watching Driver perform.
“Take after take, I was like, ‘How is he doing this?’” Goudey emphasized. “Each take is perfect, we could use that. I thought it was so fascinating.”
But where Driver instilled preparedness, Goudey turned to Johansson to demonstrate how to fully embody a role.
“Scarlett, I learned a lot about the importance of physicality,” he continued. “Before an intense scene, she would use her body—that’s our instrument as actors, our body—and she would use that to get herself there, and to get herself back out of it, too. To calm herself down after a take and to get ready for the next one.”
Meanwhile, Teller led by example when it came to mentoring Goudey.

“Miles actually taught me a lot of technical stuff,” Goudey added. “Like how to operate on set, because this was my first time being on a set of this caliber. So, just seeing how he operates as number one on the call sheet, how he treats everybody around him. It was really, really cool to witness.”
And Teller made sure both Goudey and Engel were looked after on set.
“He was very, very much there for me and Roman, since this is our first real, big thing,” Goudey shared. “I thought that was so cool that he was really there for us and he made it clear from day one.”
