Bangladesh wins first Asian Games individual medal in 40 years as Jinnat Akter claims bronze in wushu

Wushu athlete Jinnat Akter won a historic bronze medal in the women’s 52 kg sanda at the ongoing Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, ending Bangladesh’s 40-year wait for an individual medal in the continental mega-event.
The 23-year-old reached the semifinals after receiving a bye in the opening round and later Indonesia’s Tharisa Florentina was disqualified for failing to make the required weight in the quarterfinals. With 15 competitors in the event, two bronze medals were awarded.
Jinnat’s run, however, ended in the semifinal, where she was defeated 4-0 by China’s Yu Di.
The achievement marks Bangladesh’s first individual Asian Games medal since boxer Mosharraf Hossain’s bronze in Seoul 1986.
Jinnat returned to her country in the early hours of Saturday, touching down to a rousing reception at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, where Bangladesh Olympic Association officials welcomed her with flowers.
