Americans across the country paid there respects on Friday to the thousands killed in the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001.
In New York, a memorial ceremony took place at the site of the World Trade Center - where about 2,700 died after hijackers crashed two planes into the Twin Towers.
US President Donald Trump gave remarks at the Pentagon during the 9/11 ceremony held there. Twenty-five years ago, American Airlines Flight 77 struck the US military headquarters, killing 184 people in the building and on the plane.
Approximately 140 miles away from the Pentagon's memorial to the 9/11 attacks, is the site where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed that day after passengers attempted to regain control of the aircraft from hijackers. Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, held a ceremony to honour the passengers and crew members killed aboard the plane.
