Melaka election: Hamzah keeps mum on PN-BN seat negotiations

MELAKA: Wawasan president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin today declined to comment on seat negotiations between PN and BN for the Melaka election.

Instead, Hamzah asked the media to focus on the Melaka Coastal Run 2026, which attracted more than 2,000 participants of various ages.

"Why are the media asking so much about politics? We want to get moving first," he said when met at the programme at Pantai Puteri here today.

PN-BN seat negotiations for the Melaka election were previously reported to be ongoing and had yet to be finalised, while Wawasan has expressed its intention to defend the Bemban and Sungai Udang state seats.

Meanwhile, Hamzah, who is also Larut member of parliament, said the Melaka Coastal Run 2026, planned about seven days before the dissolution of the Melaka state legislative assembly, was not solely about politics.

He said the event could potentially become an annual programme to attract more visitors to the state.

He said the idea for the programme emerged from a meeting with former Melaka chief minister and Wawasan vice-president Tan Sri Rahim Thamby Chik about a week before the dissolution of the state assembly.

"The programme was planned seven days before the dissolution. We did not know they were going to dissolve it on Tuesday.

"Tan Sri Rahim Thamby Chik and I met and asked why we did not do something this Saturday. It turned out that when we held it, they went ahead and dissolved the Melaka state assembly," he said.

The programme attracted more than 2,000 participants, which Hamzah said reflected encouraging public response.

He said the event also aimed to attract young people and Melaka residents to take part in activities that fostered community ties.

He said if held annually, the event could help revive interest in visiting Melaka while also boosting the state's tourism sector.
