Court to AG Oduor: Explain why Zimbabwean was denied Kenya entry

The High Court has directed Attorney-General Dorcas Oduor to explain why Zimbabwean human rights activist Brian Kagoro has been denied entry into Kenya.

Mr Kagoro had secured court orders directing the government to allow him into Kenya, pending determination of a petition the human rights activist filed.

The court has now given Ms Oduor 14 days to explain why Mr Kagoro has still been denied entry.

Mr Kagoro, the Africa director of Open Society Foundations, was removed from a Nairobi-bound flight in Ethiopia last Tuesday.

In February, Mr Kagoro had travelled back to Nairobi from South Africa when immigration and security officers pulled him aside at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

In court papers, Mr Kagoro said he was detained and interrogated for 15 hours before being deported.

Security agencies have accused Mr Kagoro and Open Society Foundations of attempting to destabilise government by sponsoring street protests.

Mr Kagoro has in the past been granted residence status by Kenya when he was stationed in Nairobi full-time. He has also been allowed into the country on several occasions.

The rights activist’s family also lives in Nairobi.

In February, Kenya declared the 51-year-old persona non grata.

The Pan-African Lawyers Union (PALU) raised concerns over the removal of Kagoro from a flight in Addis Ababa.
