Will there be a Below season 2 on Netflix? Showrunner weighs in

Translate

Netflix's eerie Newfoundland-set thriller Below has arrived in full, dropping all six episodes at once and sending Josh Hartnett down into the watery depths to pursue a monster.

The series follows fisherman Calvin Penney (Hartnett) in the small town of Snook's Arm as he teams up with marine zoologist Fonda Howander (Mackenzie Davis) to confront a mysterious threat lurking beneath the surface, while unravelling secrets tied to the waters and his own past.

Hartnett leads a stacked cast that includes Mackenzie Davis, Charlie Heaton, Ruby Stokes, Rohan Campbell and Kaleb Horn, with the series taking us down a twisty road.

But with the story told across a tightly contained run, the big question for fans is whether there is any room left for more episodes.

As things stand, there will be no Below season 2. Netflix has positioned the project as a six-episode limited series, meaning it was conceived and produced as a self-contained story rather than the opening chapter of an ongoing show, as a result no renewal has been announced.

Meanwhile, showrunner Jesse McKeown confirmed he has no plans for more seasons.

"This is a limited series, and this is this is what we all wanted to make, was was you know something that felt like an event and something that felt you know complete and satisfying," he told Radio Times.

"Thematically, the story isn't over you know and and even though it's something of a happy ending for Calvin... it's not a happy ending overall because there are still these huge issues facing us, so that that's what I wanted to acknowledge."

McKeown added: "I do love the characters and I love this world, so never say never, but this is a limited series, and that's the ending."
