Queenie slightly accelerates over PH sea east of extreme northern Luzon

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Storm Queenie has slightly accelerated while moving west-northwestward over the Philippine Sea east of extreme northern Luzon, the state weather bureau reported on Friday.

Based on the 11 a.m. Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) weather bulletin, Queenie – located 860 kilometers east of Extreme Northern Luzon – has a speed of 25 kilometers per hour (kph).

The tropical storm maintained its strength, carrying a maximum sustained wind speed of 75 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph.

No tropical cyclone wind signal is currently hoisted in any part of the country.

Queenie is forecast to move west-northwestward this Friday before moving northwestward on Saturday morning.

Pagasa added that by Saturday afternoon, “the tropical cyclone is forecast to decelerate as it begins to turn from northwestward to northeastward.”

The tropical storm is forecast to gradually intensify and may reach the “typhoon” category by Sunday.

Queenie is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) between Sunday afternoon and evening. 

Outside the PAR, Pagasa said Queenie is expected to accelerate as it moves northeastward away from the country. /jpv
