‘Daredevil’ star Vincent D’Onofrio defends Deborah Ann Woll from ‘God Of War: Laufey’ hate
Vincent D’Onofrio has defended his Daredevil co-star Deborah Ann Woll following backlash from her starring role in God Of War: Laufey.
Instead of another story following the titular God Of War Kratos, Laufey follows his wife through the underworld after her death at the beginning of the 2018 reboot.
Ever since the game was announced in June, a vocal minority of gamers have criticised God Of War: Laufey for having a female protagonist and attacked Laufey actor Deborah Ann Woll. More recently, there have been complaints that Laufey isn’t attractive enough.
“Gamers. Sony’s Santa Monica Studio has made their stance clear: They choose feminism over their jobs. They would rather go bankrupt than give you an ounce of female attractiveness,” reads one of the tweets from X user Geralt Of Goonia, who went on to ask for a boycott of the game.

However D’Onofrio disagreed with the tweet. “Not that you asked, but in no way do I agree with you,” he wrote on social media.. “Deborah is beautiful and extremely talented. She is as smart as a whip and a complete nerd. Also incredibly kind. How perfect she is! And a good friend.”
“I am a fan of God Of War,” he added. “I for one cannot wait to play the new game with my son.”

Earlier this year, Woll addressed the backlash while at a convention. “Genuinely, I thought I was going to be much more affected by it,” she told one fan. “But one, I’m not on social media so that helps. And two, I feel totally unbothered because I know it’s great. It’s fine if it’s not your cup of tea but in no universe is it bad.”
“They just hate to see a woman win,” replied the fan, who shared the interaction on TikTok. “I know, they can’t do it,” replied Woll.

Studio boss Cory Barlog has also addressed the backlash. “While [God Of War: Laufey] is a different thing, it’s still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly want to explore [with] all these different characters in there. But there’s always going to be Kratos games throughout the whole history,” he explained in an interview. Sony Santa Monica also took to X to reassure fans that “Kratos is [still] the God Of War,” and they have “many more stories to tell with him.”
God Of War: Laufey will launch February 16, 2027 for PlayStation 5.
