President monitors forest and land fire response

Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto monitored the latest developments in efforts to tackle forest and land fires in several parts of Sumatra and Kalimantan, with around 209.78 hectares of land still undergoing firefighting operations as of Wednesday.

President monitored the condition during a limited meeting on disaster management via video conference in Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday.

The agenda specifically discussed developments in forest and land fires, particularly in West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said President Prabowo had requested an update on the latest forest and land fire situation and response efforts.

"Today, President Prabowo requested the latest report from the National Agency for Disaster Countermeasures (BNPB) on the forest and land fires in Kalimantan, particularly West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan, and also in Sumatra," Wijaya said in a press statement.

The Head of BNPB Suharyanto reported that as of Wednesday, around 209.78 hectares of land were still being subjected to firefighting operations by teams in the field.

"The report as of today: at least 209.78 hectares are still being extinguished. We are monitoring this day by day and will continue to make every effort to increase the extinguished area each day," he said.

The government is continuing to intensify efforts to tackle forest and land fires, including through large-scale weather modification operations, which will continue at least until the rainy season returns to normal.

During the meeting, the President was accompanied by Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.

Suharyanto and the Head of the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG), Teuku Faisal Fathani, delivered their reports via online video conference.

The meeting reflected the continued daily monitoring to ensure that firefighting efforts can quickly put out the remaining fires.
