Winnie Odinga’s Senate Bid Sparks Questions Over Sifuna and Babu Owino Alliance

Translate

Winnie Odinga’s declaration that she intends to contest the Nairobi senatorial seat in the 2027 General Election has sparked fresh debate over her political loyalties, her relationship with the Linda Mwananchi faction and the possible implications for other aspirants, including Edwin Sifuna and Babu Owino.

Winnie, the youngest daughter of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, announced her ambition during the first anniversary commemoration of her father’s death at Migwena Sports and Cultural Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County.

She said she intended to contest the seat currently held by Sifuna, who has also expressed interest in seeking the presidency.

Her announcement has raised questions about whether she will remain firmly within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) or align herself more closely with Linda Mwananchi, a faction associated with Sifuna, Babu and Siaya Governor James Orengo.

The uncertainty comes as Winnie’s brother, Raila Odinga Junior, has publicly backed President William Ruto’s re-election bid, highlighting differing political positions within the Odinga family.

Although Winnie has not clearly stated whether she intends to leave ODM, her appearance at the anniversary event and her association with leaders linked to Linda Mwananchi have fuelled speculation about the faction’s growing influence within the party.

Karen Nyamu Warns of Possible Fallout Between Winnie and Babu

Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has warned that Winnie’s possible association with Linda Mwananchi could complicate Babu Owino’s ambitions to become Nairobi governor.

Nyamu argued that if the faction backs Winnie for senator while supporting Babu for governor, it could face questions about ethnic representation in a city with a diverse electorate.

“If Winnie is going to join Linda Mwananchi, then she will completely destroy Babu Owino. Nairobi is a cosmopolitan city. We cannot have a Luo governor and senator, so where does that leave Babu Owino?” Nyamu said.

She suggested that Sifuna could prioritise Winnie in the Senate race, potentially leaving Babu to reconsider his political options.

“I think Sifuna would want to give Winnie the priority, so Babu will be eliminated. We are seeing a fallout in the near future because Babu is not about to just give up his governor ambitions. He is just going to change vehicle,” she added.

Babu, the Embakasi East MP, has been associated with Linda Mwananchi, which has emerged as a rallying point for ODM leaders opposed to the party’s continued cooperation with Ruto’s administration.

Winnie’s entry into the Senate race could therefore test the faction’s ability to accommodate politicians seeking different elective positions in Nairobi.

Analyst Cautions Against Assuming Youth Support Guarantees Victory

Political analyst Oscar Omondi said Nairobi’s cosmopolitan character meant that political camps could not assume support from one community would be enough to secure victory.

He argued that a possible arrangement involving Babu for governor, Winnie for senator and former Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo for woman representative would raise questions about ethnic balance and the ability to attract voters from different communities.

“Nairobi’s political landscape has traditionally relied on a delicate balance of alliances to secure a winning coalition,” Omondi said.

He noted that Nairobi voters often respond to leaders capable of reaching across ethnic and generational lines, while language and cultural familiarity may play a more prominent role in political mobilisation in some rural constituencies.

Omondi also cautioned against interpreting enthusiasm at political rallies as proof of a guaranteed voting bloc.

“Young people may view these leaders through the lens of generational solidarity, but when it comes to a general election, rival coalitions will quickly exploit a single-community lineup to rally other major voting blocs against them,” he said.

He argued that candidates would need to build alliances across communities rather than assume that youth support would automatically translate into votes.

Jalang’o Welcomes Winnie to the Race

Lang’ata MP Felix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has welcomed Winnie’s entry into the Nairobi Senate contest, saying it would make the race more competitive.

Jalang’o, who is also seeking the seat, said he was not intimidated by her announcement and remained determined to pursue his political ambition.

“Winnie’s entry into the race makes it even more exciting, competitive and serious because the other people who announced their bid were not as serious. Baba did not bring us up to be afraid of anything. We are going to the wire. There is no giving up,” he said.

Winnie announced her bid in Bondo, saying she intended to pursue the seat as Sifuna considered higher political office.

“Let it not be a rumour that as Edwin Sifuna searches for higher offices, I see there is a space. That is why I will stand for the senator of Nairobi,” she said.

Jalang’o maintained that Winnie had every right to contest the seat and said the race would ultimately be determined by voters and the party’s nomination process.

“If she is finding her space in this senatorial bid, we are ready. ODM tuko tayari and it is her democratic right to vie just like any other aspirant,” he said.

He also pledged to support whoever wins the ODM ticket if he fails to secure the nomination.

“I am a member of ODM and a member of the broad-based government, and that is where we will fight. If I don’t get the ticket during the nominations, I will support the person who gets it,” he added.

Robert Alai Suggests Winnie’s Bid Could Check Babu’s Ambitions

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai offered a different interpretation of Winnie’s entry into the race, suggesting that it could form part of a strategy to counter Babu’s political ambitions.

“Winnie Odinga’s run for Senate under Linda Mwananchi is Sifuna’s way of countering Babu Owino. No effect on Jalang’o, but now it even kills Babu’s quest,” Alai said.

His remarks added to the debate over whether Winnie’s candidacy could strengthen Linda Mwananchi or expose competing ambitions within the group.

Nairobi Senate Race Attracts More Aspirants

Winnie, Jalang’o and other political figures are positioning themselves for a contest that is already attracting interest from several aspirants.

Those reported to be eyeing the seat include nominated Senator Crystal Asige, musician William Karuga Kimani, popularly known as KRG The Don, United Opposition youth leader Ken Babu, lawyer Cecil Miller and former Makadara MP Reuben Ndolo.

As the list of contenders grows, attention is likely to focus on the political parties they choose, the outcome of nominations and whether rival aspirants can agree on a common strategy.

Winnie’s next political steps will be particularly significant for ODM, given her family’s long association with the party and the growing debate over its direction following Raila’s death.
