Box Office: ‘Street Fighter’ Makes $4 Million in Previews, ‘You Can See Everything’ Behind With $1.75 Million

Several new challengers are stepping into the box office ring this weekend to face off.

Paramount’s “Street Fighter” video game adaptation should lead the pack of newcomers. It made $4 million in Thursday previews at the box office, and it’s expected to make $25 million to $35 million in its debut. Legendary and video game developer Capcom co-financed the film for $82 million, with Paramount only paying distribution costs. Directed by Kitao Sakura, the new take on the classic fighting games star Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji, Callina Liang, Jason Momoa, 50 Cent and more as colorful brawlers who face off in a high-stakes tournament.

Disney’s “Whalefall” made $900,000 in Thursday previews and is looking to claim second place with $10 million to $12 million this weekend. Directed by Brian Duffield, it stars Austin Abrams as a scuba diver who gets swallowed by a giant sperm whale and must find a way to escape. It cost $60 million to produce, but positive reviews for the claustrophobic thriller should give it some staying power.

The highly anticipated Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” from A24 made $1.75 million in previews and is aiming for third place with $7 million to $8 million, a stellar debut for a non-fiction doc. The movie cost just $7 million to produce and has been building hype since it had a surprise debut at last month’s Telluride Film Festival. Directors Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim secretly filmed Elizabeth Holmes ahead of her 11-year prison sentence and even lived with the disgraced Theranos founder to get full access to her life. It’s expected to be a rare box office hit for a documentary and could even land in this year’s Oscar race.

The final newcomer this weekend is Focus Features’ Jane Austen adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility,” which cost $25 million and is on track to make $5 million to $8 million this weekend. It made $1.15 million from advance screenings and previews. The new take on the classic novel stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles as Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, who navigate love, loss and financial uncertainty as they are forced to leave their family estate in Sussex.
