Avatar: Seven Havens is a bold new take on the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise, pushing the timeline further than ever before. So far, aside from tie-in books that explore the lives of past Avatars like Kyoshi, Roku, and Yangchen, and extended flashbacks offering glimpses into the past, Avatar: The Last Airbender's on-screen timeline has remained fairly compact. Like Star Wars, the Avatar timeline is calculated based on a single pivotal event — in this case, the genocide of the Air Nomads at the hands of the Fire Nation at the beginning of the Hundred Year War.
As such, Avatar: The Last Airbender starts 99 years after that event, or 99AG, with Aang and the Gaang defeating Fire Lord Ozai in 100AG. The recently released Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender movie serves as a bridge between the original cartoon and its sequel series, following Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko, now fully grown adults, on a dangerous adventure. The Legend of Korra, meanwhile, starts 70 years after Avatar: The Last Airbender in 170AG. Katara, Toph, and Zuko are still alive at this point in the timeline, so while the world looks fairly different, Korra's Avatar era is still heavily connected to Aang's. The Legend of Korra ends in 174AG.
Now, with Avatar: Seven Havens, the Avatar timeline has expanded massively, even though it focuses on Korra's successor. The world Aang once knew is long gone, replaced by something far more dangerous, barren, and post-apocalyptic.
Avatar: Seven Havens Is Set Far Into The Future
Last month, executive producer Sehaj Sethi revealed that Avatar: Seven Havens is set 225 years after The Legend of Korra. That puts it at roughly 399AG, the furthest point in the Avatar: The Last Airbender timeline (for now, at least). In this era, the Avatar is no longer seen as a beacon of hope, but rather a being of destruction, openly reviled. During Korra's tenure, something happened that caused the "Cataclysm," forcing humanity to retreat into seven walled cities, the titular Havens, to survive. What Korra did — or is supposed to have done — hasn't been revealed yet.
The first Haven introduced in Avatar: Seven Havens, Ellora, is ravaged by tornadoes and terrifying, spirit-powered lightning storms. The Legend of Korra's fantastical, 1920s-inspired technological advancements like trains, planes, and mecha suits are long gone. As far as we know, aside from Ellora and the other Havens (if they're still operational, of course), everything the Gaang built and rebuilt is in ruins.
How Seven Havens' Timeline Changes The Avatar's Role
This dystopian landscape sets the stage for the show to introduce a new earthbender Avatar, Pavi, a young girl (younger than Aang in ATLA) left to roam the streets alone with her cat monkey, Geet. Though Pavi has a kind heart and wants to help people and animals in need, she needs to be careful with her bending. Even the slightest wrong move could reveal her identity as the Avatar, and in this era, that's dangerous. The Avatar is no longer a savior, a bridge between humanity and the spirit world. They're to be feared and hated.
This completely changes the Avatar's role in the story. While the world desperately needed the Avatar during the century Aang was stuck in the ice, it never turned on him or treated him as a villain. He was the world's last hope, the only one able to stop Fire Lord Ozai and the Fire Nation. People against the Fire Nation honored him and welcomed him into their homes. A massive statue of Aang was erected just outside Republic City.
Though Korra had a tougher time with the public during The Legend of Korra, especially after opening the portals to the spirit world, people still turned to her for guidance. They understood that she was the only one capable of defeating enemies like Kuvira, and the good she did largely outweighed her mistakes and the unintended consequences of her well-meaning actions. She brought back the airbenders beyond Aang's own family, after all, and they still exist, even in this new, darker era.
Pavi, and anyone associated with her, will have a much harder time convincing the citizens of Ellora that they can help them. Still, with vengeful spirits roaming free (one of which looks suspiciously like Vaatu, the ancient dark spirit first introduced in The Legend of Korra), the new Avatar will be the only one able to help them. Hopefully, the world will learn the truth before it's too late in Avatar: Seven Havens.
