India wins first gold medal of Asian Games 2026 after women’s cricket team beats Sri Lanka in final

India won its first gold medal of the ongoing Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, after the women’s cricket team retained its title.
The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side notched up a mammoth 147-run win over Sri Lanka to clinch back-to-back titles in this event. In Hangzhou 2023 as well, India had beaten the Lankans to the gold.
In the final at the Aichi Prefectural Korogi Sports Park, the Women in Blue set a daunting total of 216/3 after significant contributions from Smriti Mandhana (79 off 45), Richa Ghosh (49 off 22), and Shafali Verma (48 off 29). This was India’s third-highest total in women’s T20Is.
Sri Lanka’s chase never really took off, losing two quick wickets in the PowerPlay. And when skipper Chamari Athapaththu was removed for 29 in the seventh over, Sri Lanka’s batting lineup folded like a pack of cards.
The island nation was bundled out for just 69 in 15.4 overs.
Spinners ruled the roost with Deepti Sharma picking three wickets, and N. Sree Charani, Shafali, Shreyanka Patil bagging two scalps each.
Earlier in the day, Pakistan beat Bangladesh by 31 runs to bag the bronze medal.
