Police have arrested two people on suspicion of child neglect after a one-year-old girl was found dead at a home in Warwickshire on Friday.

Warwickshire Police were called to a house on Long Street, Atherstone, at around 11.50am after receiving reports of a child in cardiac arrest.

Emergency services at the scene attempted to save the girl, but were unsuccessful, the force said.

A man and a woman have been arrested as detectives continue to investigate the child’s death.

There is a partial road closure on Long Street while enquiries continue, and officers remain in the area to speak with anyone who has concerns.

In a statement, Warwickshire Police said: “Two arrests have been made as detectives investigate the death of a child today, 11 September.

“At around 11.50am we were called to a home in Atherstone to reports of a one-year-old girl in cardiac arrest.

“Sadly, despite us and our ambulance colleagues making every effort to save her, she passed away.

“A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of child neglect and they remain in custody at this time.

“There is a scene in place and a partial road closure on Long Street and we would like to thank residents for their understanding. We know many will find this news upsetting.

“Officers will be in the area for the time being – please speak with them if you have any concerns.”

It comes two weeks after a newborn girl died from stab wounds at a property in Sheffield.

South Yorkshire Police received reports of a concern for the safety of a newborn baby in the Wincobank area at 5.58am on Sunday 30 August.

Seven people, aged between 15 and 38, were arrested on suspicion of murder and two of them, aged 26 and 37, have since been bailed.
