KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 2 — Two friends pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to attempting to rob a jewellery supplier of valuables worth RM8.2 million last month.

Salesman Tan Kah Seng, 35, and mechanic Tan Chien Ann, 30, were jointly charged with attempting to rob Toung Zheng Fay, 30, of three bags containing various types of jewellery while armed with a machete in front of a hotel in Brickfields at 10am on October 14.

The charge was framed under Sections 393 and 397 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code. Section 393 carries a maximum jail term of seven years and a fine, while Section 397 provides for imprisonment of up to 14 years and a fine or whipping upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Syafika Azwa Fikri did not offer bail, citing the non-bailable nature of the offence and the high value of the jewellery involved.

Lawyer Revin Kumar requested bail for both his clients, saying that Kah Seng was married and supporting his eight-year-old child, wife and parents, who suffer from health issues.

“Chien Ann, meanwhile, is divorced and earns RM2,000 a month. He supports his nine-year-old son and parents,” Revin said.

Judge Noor Aini Yusof set bail at RM15,000 with one surety for each of the accused and fixed November 30 for mention. — Bernama
