Jurassic Park Officially Replaces Alan Grant In Upcoming Survival Sequel

While Jurassic Park has seen several sequels and spin-offs over the years, nothing quite compares to the 1993 original film starring Sam Neill as Alan Grant. Grant quickly became one of the franchise's most recognizable faces, with his expertise in paleontology and initially uneasy relationship with children making him the perfect protagonist to take on the chaos unfolding on Isla Nublar.

Neill eventually returned as Grant for Jurassic Park 3 before reprising the role decades later in Jurassic World Dominion, reuniting him with fellow original characters Ellie Sattler and Ian Malcolm. By then, however, Jurassic Park had already begun shifting toward new generations of lead roles, most notably Owen Grady and Claire Dearing throughout the Jurassic World trilogy.

The franchise has moved beyond its original main characters and introduced new favorites with each chapter, and its most highly anticipated upcoming sequel will take that even further. This time, Alan Grant is officially being replaced by an entirely new protagonist stepping directly into the same nightmare he barely managed to survive more than 30 years ago.

Alan Grant Steps Aside In Upcoming Jurassic Park Sequel

Jurassic Park is officially returning to Isla Nublar in the upcoming release of Jurassic Park: Survival from Saber Interactive, a brand-new narrative adventure set immediately after the events of the original film. The story follows Dr. Maya Joshi, an InGen scientist who failed to evacuate the island after everything went south.

Joshi is effectively replacing Alan Grant as the protagonist of this new chapter, seeing as Grant was the main focus of the film that guided audiences through the dangers of Isla Nublar as the park's systems collapsed and the dinosaurs broke free. Survival revisits that same disaster and its immediate aftermath, but instead of returning to Grant, the game shifts the spotlight to an entirely new character who was left behind after the movie ended.

Joshi will give fans a completely new perspective of the island that's far different from anything we saw following Grant or any of the main characters in the 1993 film. Grant was an outsider brought in to evaluate Jurassic Park, while Joshi is directly connected to InGen and can give us more backstory on the park's development itself.

Her story should offer a new look at familiar locations, offer up better insight into what's going on with the loose dinosaurs, and will even be able to give us a better sense of just how deep the company's responsibility for the catastrophe goes. Survival will effectively give Isla Nublar a new protagonist and a completely different survival story that recontextualizes everything we've come to know since the film first released almost 33 years ago.

Jurassic Park: Survival Is A Long Time Coming

Jurassic Park: Survival is a single-player, first-person action-adventure game from Saber Interactive with exploration, stealth, and survival mechanics as the core gameplay focus. Players will be able to explore a fully realized Isla Nublar, including familiar locations such as the Visitor Center and the park gates, while dealing with dinosaurs that have distinct and adaptive behaviors, though importantly, it's not an open-world game.

Survival is mostly about avoiding and/or outsmarting dinosaurs using distractions, stealth, environments, and resources that Maya can find scattered around, a formula that Saber has become well-known for in many of their releases, such as the upcoming Hellraiser: Revival.

The game was first announced at The Game Awards in December 2023, when Saber Interactive and Universal Games revealed it for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. At the time, Saber described it as a new story set the day after the events of the 1993 film, immediately distinguishing it from the park-building and management games that have dominated the franchise in recent years.

As of September 2026, however, Jurassic Park: Survival still does not have an announced release date, and Saber continues to list the game as TBA, though it remains in development for the same three platforms and is available to wishlist now.
