Marvel Defines Avengers' New Era With 1 Chilling Image

Marvel teases the Avengers' next era with an ominous glimpse at what could happen if they right their wrongs. Much like Earth's Mightiest Heroes never give up, their villains share an equally solid refusal to stay down permanently. Ultron is impossible to eliminate due to his virtual nature, and Thanos inevitably claws his way back to life due to his special connection to death. Similarly to Ultron, the Avengers can never say they have defeated the final iteration of Kang the Conqueror, as there will always be another iteration of Nathaniel Richards somewhere out there in the time stream.

Right now, the Avengers are undergoing a critical era of evolution in both the movies and the comics. In theaters, Earth's Mightiest Heroes will close out the Multiverse Saga with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, where the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe may change and give way to a fresh version of the franchise. Meanwhile, the Avengers find themselves forced to reinvent themselves in the face of Red Hulk's global rampage and the arrival of Marvel's new Miracleman during Armageddon, where the Avengers' sheer power isn't enough to prevent cataclysmic destruction.

What will happen once Avengers: Secret Wars and Armageddon conclude remains to be revealed, but Marvel begins to tease the future of the Avengers in the comics with an ominous prediction.

Iron Man Has A Premonition Of Spider-Man's Death At The Hands Of Mephisto

Avengers: Armageddon #5; Written By Chip Zdarsky; Art By Delio Diaz, Frank Alpizar, Ario Anindito, And Jesus Aburtov

Mephisto kills Spider-Man in Avengers Armageddon #5

Following the catastrophic explosion of a nuclear warhead over Plesetsk and the death of nine thousand innocent people, Carol Danvers has been depowered, Nick Fury Sr and Jr are devising their own plans for the future of superheroes, and the world's governments pressure the United States to enact strict control over the superhuman population. Meanwhile, Tony Stark is quick to experiment with the probability machine to predict possible futures where the Avengers right their wrongs, but when he tries to find the perfect one, he realizes that it apparently requires Spider-Man to be killed by Mephisto.

Playing with time and space rarely leads to positive outcomes in the Marvel multiverse, whether that involves time travel, the creation of new realities, or attempting to predict the future. Even if the Avengers follow the order of events that theoretically lead to Mephisto's return, Spider-Man's death doesn't have to be a certain scenario, but the fact that Tony Stark already learned that it's a likely one will probably affect the heroes' decisions from now on, which could lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy. Just like a character going back in time to provide information to their younger self, the mere act of seeing a probable future has an inevitable impact on the whole timeline.

Mephisto's Future Is Forever Intertwined With Spider-Man

Spider-Man And Mephisto Are Destined To Make Each Other Suffer

Mephisto talks about his link to Spider-Man

Mephisto and Spider-Man share an eternal bond forged through their bargain. Mephisto fears Peter Parker because of his lineage, as prophecy dictates that Mayday Parker, Peter and Mary Jane Watson's future daughter, will strike the final blow to destroy Mephisto's realm. Meanwhile, Peter Parker's decision to restore the status quo through a deal with the Devil in Spider-Man: One More Day, following the revelation of his secret identity to the public in Civil War, forever tied him to Mephisto. Hence, it's only natural that their story eventually concludes in one killing the other.

Mephisto's eventual resurgence opens the door for Marvel to resolve the lingering ghost of the highly divisive One More Day. Confronting the demon once more gives Spider-Man the chance to reclaim his stolen destiny, seal his union with Mary Jane, and allow Aunt May a peaceful, natural rest, especially now that Cormac Parker a.k.a. Ravage has reminded Peter that she's in constant danger thanks to him. With Armageddon threatening to revive the Superhuman Registration Act and Spider-Man facing a rematch with Mephisto, there had never been a better opportunity to revisit One More Day.
