Indonesia highlights cyber threats at ASEAN-Korea tourism forum

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Tourism Ministry said it remains vigilant against cyberattacks that could disrupt services and negatively affect tourists’ travel experiences.

"When discussing the use of digital technology, we must prepare from the outset for two types of risks: misuse, hacking, and hoaxes, as well as technical failures," Ministry Expert Staff for Crisis Management Fadjar Hutomo said during the ASEAN-Korea Roundtable on Tourism 2026 in Jakarta on Thursday.

Hutomo said potential cyber threats include disruptions to airport digital systems, hacking of tourist data, and technical failures.

Such incidents could delay journeys and cause long queues, making preventive measures essential for the sector, he added.

Hutomo said the tourism sector's growing dependence on digital technology increases exposure to system misuse and technical disruptions.

These risks, he added, must be taken into account from the outset.

For instance, disruptions to airport systems could hamper service processes, lead to longer queues, and force tourists to wait for hours before continuing their journeys.

Hutomo noted that such scenarios require proactive planning as digitalization expands across travel services, including electronic visa processing and immigration procedures.

While digitalization offers convenience, security considerations and tourist data protection must remain priorities, he said.

He added that digital security management involves key authorities, including the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs and the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN).

Hutomo emphasized that effective risk management requires cross-sectoral coordination across multiple government institutions.

The Tourism Ministry raised cybersecurity concerns during Panel Session 1, titled "Enhancing Security and Travel Facilitation," alongside representatives from Timor-Leste, Cambodia, and Thailand.
