Red Dead Redemption 2: Undead Nightmare 2 Is The Perfect Halloween Expansion

With collective thousands of hours in games like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Elden Ring, and The Legend of Zelda, he's now writes game features, guides, and reviews for Screen Rant, but has covered a wide range of topics, including ancient history, affordable travel, and overall health.
Red Dead Redemption 2 just got the perfect unofficial expansion: the long-awaited successor to Undead Nightmare. The original Red Dead Redemption had just a singular story expansion, the well-loved Undead Nightmare. This was a tongue-in-cheek, but often brilliant horror-themed short campaign released to coincide with Halloween in 2010.
Undead Nightmare was widely praised by critics in its day, and beloved by fans. It took the concept of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas' urban legends — the hidden Sasquatch and alleged zombies in San Andreas — and made them real in a delightfully absurd DLC.
But Red Dead Redemption 2 came and went, and there was nary a whisper of a successor to Undead Nightmare, despite very real demand. Now, fans are taking matters into their own hands with the release of a very unofficial — but still impressive — Undead Nightmare 2.
Undead Nightmare 2 Is The RDR2 DLC We Never Got
First uploaded to Nexus Mods on October 16, 2025, Undead Nightmare 2 is an unofficial story DLC for RDR2 created by M8Tmods. Much like the original Undead Nightmare, this is a horror-themed expansion for Red Dead Redemption 2, in which Arthur will face off against zombies, shamans, leviathans, and other supernatural entities in a ten-mission sequence.
The mod's story begins, much like the original Undead Nightmare, with Uncle getting himself into some serious trouble. Arthur meets him at Riggs Station to discuss a business opportunity, but the whole thing turns out to be more than they bargained for; the two must rush to save Dutch from encroaching zombies back at camp, then put a stop to whatever summoned them.
It's a lot more story-focused, and definitely not as expansive as the original Undead Nightmare, but it is a nice way to recapture a little bit of the RDR1 DLC's campy magic. Undead Nightmare 2 even features selections from the horror-infused country soundtrack of the original expansion's soundtrack, transporting you straight back to wherever you were on Halloween in 2010. The DLC even has voice acting (albeit text-to-speech), so it'll fit right in with the rest of the game.
What You Need To Play Undead Nightmare 2
Undead Nightmare 2 requires a working PC copy of Red Dead Redemption 2. Unfortunately, since mods haven't made it to consoles yet, so this is a PC exclusive for the time being. Some commenters on the mod's bug reporting page have said the mission markers won't show up in certain story chapters, so you may have to progress the story if it doesn't appear to be working at first.
You'll also need a series of other mods — all of which are listed on the Nexus page — to make some of Undead Nightmare 2's unique mechanics work. That includes Undead Nightmares 2 - Origins, a mod that adds zombie-infested settlements and survival missions to vanilla RDR2.
With all that set up, though, you can dive in and experience the long-awaited successor to Undead Nightmare for yourself, even if it didn't come directly from Rockstar. It's the perfect way for Red Dead Redemption 2 fans to celebrate Halloween.
