Nigeria stars Taiwo Awoniyi and Frank Onyeka were in action but could not help Coventry avoid. 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in Monday night’s Premier League match.

Onyeka and Awoniyi were both introduced into the encounter in the 60th minute.

Tottenham finally secured their first Premier League win of the season after seven matches, which move them off the relegation zone to 16th on six points. Coventry, who also have six points, are 17th.

James Maddison marked his first start in 526 days with a stunning goal in the 14th minute. The former Coventry academy player curled a first-time strike from outside the box into the top corner after fine work from Mohammed Kudus.

Coventry equalised just four minutes into the second half, punishing poor defending from Spurs.

But Omar Marmoush restored Tottenham’s lead in the 58th minute with his first goal for the club — a fine curling effort from the edge of the box before Ben Davies made it safe in the 96th minute with a left-footed strike.

It was Roberto De Zerbi’s first league win as Tottenham boss after taking his squad to Marbella for warm-weather training last week.
