Nigeria’s Super Sand Eagles suffered a 4-5 penalty shootout defeat to Ghana after an entertaining 4-4 draw following extra time in the first leg of their 2026 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations (BSAFCON) qualifying tie in Kaduna on Saturday.

Isa Hamza Manga was the standout performer for Nigeria, netting a hat-trick, including the opening goal, as the Sand Eagles battled fiercely against Ghana’s Black Sharks.

Ekene Obi also got on the scoresheet in extra time, but Nigeria could not hold on for victory as their opponents fought back to force a penalty shootout.

Mawuli Sosu scored twice for Ghana, while Wise Nyamadi struck an extra-time equaliser to ensure the Black Sharks took the contest to penalties after regulation time and extra time ended in a 4-4 stalemate.

Ghana held their nerve in the shootout, converting five penalties to Nigeria’s four to claim a crucial first-leg advantage ahead of the return fixture in Keta next Sunday.

The result leaves the Sand Eagles with a difficult task in the second leg, where they must produce a strong away performance to keep their qualification hopes alive.

The winner of the two-legged tie will earn a place at the 2026 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal.
