‘Barbershop’ TV Show Sets February Release on Amazon, Drops First Look at Jermaine Fowler

The comedy series, a continuation of the beloved film franchise, will premiere all eight episodes on Amazon Prime Video on Feb. 10. The streamer made the announcement while dropping two first-look images of the cast.

The logline for the show reads, “Travis ‘Trav’ Walker (Jermaine Fowler) returns to Chicago hoping to honor his grandfather’s legacy at the iconic Calvin’s barbershop, but the shop has changed, and so has the city. As Trav struggles to find his place among a new crew of barbers and loyal customers, Calvin’s remains what it’s always been, a place for sharp fades, sharp opinions, and a community that always has something to say.”

The cast also features Brett Gray, Punkie Johnson, Roy Wood Jr., E.J. Bonilla, Bresha Webb, Bokeem Woodbine, Tiana Okoye and Langston Kerman, with a lineup of guest stars that includes Zack Fox, Ego Nwodim, Diallo Riddle, Ziwe, Tituss Burgess, Comedian CP, Devon Walker and Belmont Cameli.

The “Barbershop” series is showrun by Marshall Todd, co-writer of the original film, and Max Searle. The two executive produce alongside Kevin Hart, Bryan Smiley, Mike Stein, and Tiffany Brown for Hartbeat; Bradley Gardner for Busy B Entertainment; Cameron Burnett and Autumn Bailey-Ford for Prominent Productions; George L. Tillman and Robert Teitel for State Street Pictures; Fowler; and Oz Rodriguez, who also directs. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios.

This is now the second “Barbershop” TV series. Showtime previously aired a sitcom based on the films with Omar Gooding in the lead role, though it lasted for just one season. The first “Barbershop” film was released in 2002 followed by sequels in 2004 and 2016. There was also the spinoff film “Beauty Shop” starring Queen Latifah in 2005. The three main films have grossed nearly $200 million worldwide.
